Ongerup arena 2015. 19-22nd Feb
Ongerup trial was held as per usual at Tim Fosters farm “Linthorpe” in the lower great southern of WA.
Ongerup can be unbearably hot in February, but this year the max temperature go to about 28. The sun still had plenty of bite in it though, and was quite uncomfortable. Being not too far from the coast, the nights are always cool, but the constant wind can be a bit hard to put up with. On Sunday morning there was a shower of rain and it became very cold, so we had to dig out some long forgotten rain gear.
This year the trial was run on a supreme course which made it more interesting.
The sheep were the usual Ongerup sheep, hard to break in, plenty of run in them and very touchy. Even too much movement or noise from the handler upset them. They took a dislike to some dogs for no particular reason, and worked quite well for others. They settled and worked ok at certain times of the day and just as we heaved a sigh of relief they went back to being as touchy as ever. If upset they just ran and kept running, often in laps around the obstacles, it was almost impossible to settle them or read what they were going to do next. Frustrating for dogs and handlers alike, but a good challenge.
It was a great weekend for the kelpies, there were 33 kelpie entries and 128 border collie entries, kelpies gained 2 wins and 6 placings from the 15 places offered over the weekend.
Also interesting, the open event was won by a novice dog.
In the novice there were 50 entries and 16 scores, in the improver there were 52 entries and 11 scores and the open event had 59 entries and 24 scores.
The scores really reflect the difficulty of the sheep.
There were about 8 pens for the entire weekend.
