Northern Districts Arena Trial
2nd - 5th August
Report by Corey Rose & Carolyn Bell Photos by Nan Lloyd
The Ballidu Sheep Dog Trial was a great trial as always, having missed a year at the venue in 2017 when the official trial was held at Dowerin due to the dry season and unavailability of sheep.
Ballidu is a favourite ground for many people, and the sheep are generally challenging but workable. Everyone missed Frank Sutherland's jovial presence as he was still recovering from injury, as was Linda Cooke, so we wish them both a very fast recovery back to good health.
The weather was cold and windy although it did fine up a bit for Sunday’s final with some sun - but still cold.
The Open Final was hotly contested, with Grant Cooke putting the score to test the field. A 98 with his trusty dog Moss followed with a 94 so he held first position till the final 12th dog who was Prince's Sally - Peter Gorman. Peter had a first round score of 95 and needed a 98 to win the trial - and that he did!!!
The sheep were white tag 1 year olds and very well behaved most of the time if you treated them right!
The judges were Colin Cosh [Novice], Carolyn Bell [Improver], and a swish new look in Jenny Atherton judging the Open.
There were some good social evenings - one Friday night at the Golf Club Rooms with a wonderful 3 course meal, and on Sat some people went to the Ballidu Hotel. The cooks were a little overwhelmed by the fact that 60 footballers had phoned to say they would also be coming that night, so sheep dog triallers left a little earlier to ease the pressure on the cooks.
The Novice was won by Tony Boyle and Chilli and the Improver was won by Dave Lacy with Blondie.
It was good to see a new trialler on the ground - Blake Robinson who had a pretty handy dog scoring 71 in the Encourage under Ken Atherton’s guidance. It would be nice to see more of these precious new starters.
There were a couple of funnies for the weekend. The water pipe burst in the toilet and water drowned all who were present, but the day was saved by Jan Cornish holding a torch and Carolyn Bell putting a dog food bowl over the water spout and turning off the difficult tap with a crescent!
Then on Friday afternoon a major catastrophe nearly occurred during the cyclonic wind with Marge Solomon holding onto the top of the office tent and looking like Mary Poppins while Tony Boyle rescued the situation with a large rope he quickly got from his ute.
Over all a very good time was had by all.
There were 37 runs in Novice with 14 scores, 31 runs in Improver with 14 scores and 63 runs in Open with 39 scores.
