In memory of some of our loved and valued sheepdogs who have recently made the journey over the Rainbow Bridge....

A big THANK YOU to Tim Foster and his family for once again allowing the Esperance Sheepdog Club to hold their annual trial at "Linthorpe", the Foster family farm located a short distance from Ongerup. It was lovely to be back to the new season of Sheep Dog Trialling for 2018, catching up with members not seen since the 2017 season ended in November.
Competitor numbers were down compared to the usual turnout but the venue once again provided an unpredictable mix of extreme weather conditions and challenging sheep.
Thursday was fine, hot and humid with competitors in shorts and sunscreen. Friday saw competitors in long pants and jumpers with the air temperature mild, but the wind cold, and blowing through some minor bouts of misty rain. Saturday brought a pleasant fine sunny day but once again the wind was a tad chilly and jumpers were needed until near lunchtime.
The sheep provided at Linthorpe for all three classes were a consistent line of 11 month old August shorn merino wethers and they worked well for the dogs that could read their mood and manage them accordingly. In general they hung together with an occasional breakaway individual. They had a tendency to face up to the dogs at the first obstacle, the race, and took a fair bit of persuasion to get them over the bridge, but once over they generally walked into the pen without too much coaxing. In all classes the time allowed to complete the course was 15 minutes with a 40 point judge's ring off for dogs and handlers not managing to mentally "get hold of" the sheep.
With attendance numbers down and the trial being so short there was only one opportunity for evening socialising. The usual gathering was held around the fire drum in the shearing shed on Thursday night, and the WA Sheepdog Association committee meeting was held in the shearing shed on Friday night. The trial finished by lunchtime on Saturday.
There were 30 entries in the novice with 10 scores, 23 entries in the improver with 6 scores and 47 entries in the open with 24 scores.
