Tarwonga State yard and Utility. Sep 5th to 8th.

The state yard and utility was the last yard and utility trial for the year. Tarwonga state is usually held in April but due to problems with sheep availability, it was moved to September.

A new course was designed for the event, and despite a few minor issues it worked very well. It was challenging and required thinking and good dog control..

The sheep were young Dohnes crosses and they were not easy to work. The calmer softer  dogs generally had better runs. In the paddock the sheep did not like being hurried or over headed and would run, split or jump fences if they were pressured too much.

In the large yards the gathers required a dog with good cover and force, but care was needed in the smaller yards as the sheep quickly packed into corners. For the most part the draft was the difficult section, and many people had difficulty getting the sheep to flow.

For the finals the truck was the hoodoo with the sheep galloping on but refusing to come off.

The weather was excellent, it got a little warm on Sat afternoon and on Fri morning there was an unexpected chilling frost.

A shower of rain Sat night interupted the BBQ but freshened things up for the finals on Sun.

There were 30 entries in the Novice yard, 28 in the Novice utility, 39 in the Open yard and 38 in the Open utility.

Overall there were 58 kelpie entries and 87 BC entries.
