Hypro State Arena Championships 2024

This year the State Three Sheep Championship was held by the Stirling Working Sheep Dog club at the Kendenup Agricultural grounds in the south of Western Australia.

The weather for the weekend was cold and windy with patchy rain and periods of sunshine.  It was a little hard for the judges but the rest of us were able to share a warm fire and hot drink.

The sheep for this event were older mix tag Merino wethers.  When the truck arrived on Thursday morning it looked like it was filled with ‘Sumo wrestlers’ and that was pretty much what we got.

The sheep took the fight to the dogs.  They were happy to brawl it out anywhere on the ground, but particularly at the first obstacle.  Those dogs able to get them through the race had a chance of making the pen.

There were 137 entries for the event. Both the Novice and the Improver had a 50-point ring off and a 15-minute time set.  Several dogs made it to the pen before running out of points.
The Novice dogs managed 12 scores from 37 runs.  The Improver dogs had 9 scores from 38 runs.

The Open run had 35 scores from 62 runs.  62 points was the lowest score needed to qualify for the finals.

The Novice event was won by Jan Cornish with Bellview Tess scoring 67 points, from Simon Leaning with Marionvale Pete earning 62 points to take second place.

Grant Cooke with Pendalup Gilbert won the Improver with 89 points over Ivan Solomon with Mac’s Sal with 68 points.

The Open was won by Ken Atherton with Ramulam Prickles scoring 71 & 86 for 157.
The Runner-up was Simon Leaning with Marionvale Di scoring 72 & 68 for 140.

The Patron’s award was presented to Jan Cornish for Novice, Courtney Moir for Improver and Cree Monaghan in the Open.
