The Central Working Sheepdog Club tried something new for this event by combining a three sheep arena trial with a yard and utility event.

The Arena and Utility event was held on the regular trial ground.  The score from one run counted towards both the Arena and Utility score.  Contestants were then required to go to the yard event, which was held at the Rodeo ring to complete their Utility run and to participate in the yard event.  Scores for each run counted for both events.

The sheep were inclined to split if given the chance and were very difficult to re-unite.  Many dogs lost their run on the back fence trying to stop the sheep returning to the let-out.

An on-line scoreboard helped to keep everyone up to date with their scores and track when their runs were due.

The yard section of the Gala trial was held in a separate area of the ground away from the Utility/Arena trial.

People prioritized their arena run, and when they were free, came and had their yard runs. This worked quite well.

The sheep were young and inclined to stick up on the dogs. Getting them to flow was not easy, and many dogs struggled in the big gathers. However, if pushed too hard they could split and head for the fences.

The truck was tricky, getting the sheep to look away from the dogs and up the ramp was the key to getting this obstacle. Due to the yard set up for the open when the truck was added, an unusual draft was required. Two forward, two under the arm, the main mob forward, and the last three under the arm.

There were more than usual mis-drafts here and so without mentioning any names I will say the women had no issues with this setup.

All in all, it was a nice, relaxed event, and spectators enjoyed the action.

Thanks to the yard and utility members who helped make it a success, so others could stay and run the arena section of the trial.

During the evening a fun event was held where teams of four attempted to complete a trial course under lights but, with enough dark spots for the sheep to hide and the contestants to be sneaky. Laughs were plenty.
