The first trial for 2021 was held at the Wagin Woolorama, and was hosted by Central Districts sheepdog club.
The Woolorama is a huge sheep and machinery show, held each year in Wagin, a small wheatbelt town app 230kms south of Perth.
Last year there was no trial held at the Woolorama so it was great to be back there this year. It is a lovely trial ground with great facilities.
The weather was unusual. It can be very hot at Wagin in March, but this year there were thunderstorms, heavy rain, and very humid conditions. The cloud cover kept the temperature down mainly but when the Sun did emerge it was extremely uncomfortable. However we have had a few dry years and no one was complaining. It made for quite good trialling conditions and there was no dust.
The sheep were another matter. They were older sheep that were not very interested in complying with the dogs. They were touchy to work, and could split quickly as they raced back to the let-outs, quite often catching dogs off guard by running behind them. This caused quite a number of crosses. Once they settled they then became very difficult to move, standing and stomping their feet and even charging some of the dogs. They got worse as the weekend went on and by the open final were really quite difficult. It was a worthy challenge though and great for the spectators.
Due to the large number of entries the Improver and Open was run as one class.
In the Novice there were 70 entries with 10 scores.
In the Improver/open 106 runs and 24 scores.
