The State Yard and Utility trial was run at an unusual time this year, normally being held much earlier. However as WA had hosted two national trials in April/May we had to move this one to the end of the year.

Entries were down a bit, perhaps because of the timing of the event, however it was still a highly competitive and entertaining trial.

The sheep were six year old Merino ewes. Crafty, fleet of foot and with a tendency to run and keep running. It was very hard to settle them outside. In the yard they worked reasonably well, however they had about 8 months wool on them so there were a number of jam ups at various sections of the course, especially the truck.

The weather was quite good, almost too hot during the day, but the nights cooled down sufficiently for the traditional campfire and BBQ. Tarwonga is always a great social event.

Yard and utility is always fairly labour intensive, needing staff at both ends of the grounds, in the office and in the kitchen so at times numbers were stretched a bit but everyone pulled their weight and made it a successful and fun trial.

Being the final utility trial for 2018, the winner of the Utility Dog of the Year was decided. This went to Ken Atherton and Ramulam Punch on 133.5 points. A very close second was Nan Lloyd with Barkervale Oswin on 133 points.
