Albany Arena Trial Friday 8th - Sunday 10th November Friendly, fine and windy would best describe the Great Southern Arena Trial held at the 2019 Albany Show this year. The sheep were challenging as always but quite workable for the right combination of dog and handler. They were a mix of ewes and wethers from Colin Ayers, who has supplied sheep for the Albany Trial for some years now. With some triallers away competing in the eastern states and some last minute cancellations, entries were on the low side, allowing for a pleasantly relaxed pace and 15 minute runs throughout. Having the luxury of a little spare time after finishing the first round of the Open on Saturday afternoon, we tried something new: some on-ground training opportunities. These up-to-six-minute sessions to work on a particular problem, with advice on offer, proved popular. Thank you to the non-participants who freely offered their support. Only the three finals were left for Sunday, so we finished in good time to pack up, do presentations and start the long journey home. Although some question the need for a Novice final, it does prove the worth of the dog to be elevated to Improver level, as it is then also qualified to enter the Supreme trials. The sheep were more cooperative in the mornings and it was interesting to see the majority of high scoring runs come early in the day. Results deserving of special mention are Des Davies (an encourage worker) coming 2nd in the Improver with Marionvale Bella, and Karyn Buller qualifying for all three finals with her home-bred Kelpie Boonining Maisie. CONGRATULATIONS to all place getters….see results listed below.
