Australian Supreme Warwick QLD. 24th to 30th September 2012. The Supreme Championship was held this year in the town of Warwick, about 2 hours south west of Brisbane. The venue was the Warwick Showgrounds, home of the famous Warwick Rodeo, which is held in October each year. The weather was changeable, ranging from freezing nights, very warm days, chilly winds and on one memorable day a sudden and violent thunderstorm which had everyone running for cover. Except for poor Jean Hydleman from WA and Glenmar midge who had to have their run in the middle of it. They both bravely battled the elements but eventually were given a re-run when the wind blew down the panels on the race. Entries for the trial were good, 250 in the Imp/Supreme, 160 in the Novice and 35 in the Encourage. Events commenced on Monday the 24th of Sep with the first round of the Ted Gaby interstate challenge and continued on with the supreme. The novice and encourage events were held in another arena, and re-used the sheep from the main ground. The sheep were very good trial sheep, light enough to be a little touchy at times and also clever enough to work out the weaker dogs. They were generally good obstacle sheep but if they found their way around the pen it was then difficult to get them to go in it. The Trans Tasman test was a nailbiter. After the first round the Kiwis were on top by ten points. The last Aussie in that round was Jim Oconnell and Camara Atom. All looked lost as the sheep raced around the pen and time ticked away. However Jim managed to pen with about 1 second to go amid huge cheers. This kept the Aussies in touch and in the second round the Aussies came out on top to win by 18 points. It was an exciting end to a great week of trialling. Results. Encourage. Judged by Bob Walsh. 1st. Liff Parr. Aquagold Bonnie. 176. 2nd Brett Smith. Cooks Nell. 162. 3rd Brett Smith. Gary White in his buggy. Gary judged the outside section of the course and as it was a very long way around the ground he had the use of the buggy. Otherwise he would have had to run many miles over the course of the week. Both Gary and Graham judged tirelessly for the 250 runs plus the finals. Due to time constraints events went after dark for a few nights. Combined with 5.30am starts it made it a very long day for the judges.
