Kendenup arena trial. March 23rd, 24th, 25th.

The third arena trial of the year for WA was held in the great southern town of Kendenup, approximately four hours south of Perth.
Facilities are excellent at Kendenup, and most people make the effort to attend. It is always a great social event. The highlight of the weekend was the sumptuous meal prepared by Wendy Gorton on the Saturday night, and enjoyed by all. Also enjoyed was the wonderful rendition of Amazing Grace sung by Tony Boyle.

The sheep were probably not enjoyed quite as much but they were good trial sheep, challenging and clever. Any dog that gave them too much leeway paid the penalty as they simply took the dog on and headed back to the letouts. They were young Merinos, deceptively small and quite strong. They didn’t like leaving the letouts, and the carry back down the ground was difficult. Competitors needed to keep a tight hold on them them as they headed around the winding pegs or the sheep made a dash back to their mates. Once they got going it was difficult to stop them.

In contrast to the previous year, when we suffered in the heat, the weather was quite pleasant, only warming up for short periods and actually quite chilly in the evenings.

There were 189 entries for the event. Competitors were limited to six runs each and the ring off system was used in order to get through the numbers.
