Mayanup Arena

Mayanup Arena 8th, 9th 10th August.

Mayanup club ran their arena trial a little earlier than usual due to the large contingent of West Aussies heading to the eastern states for the Supremes.

Mayanup trial is held at Yallambee, the property of Ken and Jenny Atherton, app 140 km south of Perth.

The sheep were young Dohne ewes and lived up to their reputation from previous trials of being almost unworkable at times, splitting, refusing to go through obstacles, and heading for the fences at full pelt.

The novice sheep on the first day were quite reasonable and with a 40 point ring off there were 15 scores out of 60 runs.

The sheep however, got progressively worse as the trial went on. In the improver a 30 point ringoff was used and there were 8 scores from 60 runs.

In the open, novice dogs were not allowed to enter, and due to time constraints, there was a 20 point ringoff. The sheep were by now very difficult to work and only 12 scores were achieved, enough for a complete final, but the sheep refused to settle and some of the finalists struggled to keep them together. There were 45 entries in the open.

At least the weather was good apart from the chilly mornings, a coolish breeze, and some light rain on the first day.

A nursery trial was held on Fri evening.This was a fun event and gave people the opportunity to show of some young dogs.
