Wagin Arena

Wagin Arena. March 6th, 7th, 8th.

Wagin is a small town about 2 1/2 hours south of Perth. The wagin trials are run in conjunction with the Wagin Woolerama, a large sheep and machinery show.

Wagin grounds are fairly small, and this seems to cause some problems. Some dogs find it hard to get far enough off the sheep and when the sheep make a break for the fence it can be difficult for the dog to stop them before the reach the boundary.

It is often very hot at Wagin, and on the Friday it reached about 38 degrees. but on Thursday and Saturday it was a much milder 28.

The 40 point ringoff was used for both improver and novice events.

The young ewes were deceptively difficult for these events, they looked calm but were very light and the slightest bump caused them to run off course. So it was quite difficult to get them in the obstacles, or keep them in a straight line. There were a lot of crosses, retireds and ringoffs.

The open sheep were more settled older wethers, and scores raised accordingly. However in the open final they became a little stubborn, running onto the dogs and causing a few issues for some.

In the Novice there were 74 entries and 17 scores, in the improver 72 entries and 14 scores and in the open 50 entries and 30 scores. Due to the high number of entries, novice dogs were not permitted to run in the open event.
